Although
I left a link to wikipedia which is enough information, I'd give my vision (or so) staff which to me is the best series I've seen to date. Both as a TV anime.
Opening (original song) series subtitled in English.
My first contact with this series was when he was 12 in the wake of a VHS that my cousin left me. The question was on VHS in other series (Street Fighter animated version that came to hook me) but he brought a promotional video about Evangelion that fascinated me.
As by then I did not have any access to internet, my interest was waning. Until years later, and with 16-17 years, while spending a season in his house (the cousin who I had left the VHS years ago) I saw had the original DVDs were sold in Spain on the series and the first movie of the same.
Before finishing the week and return to my village, and had recorded on my laptop Series (5 DVD's) plus the 2 movies that had at the time of it.

ARGUMENT
The series is set in the year 2015. We are one humanity that is recuparando of an incident in Antarctica in 2000 and caused a global catastrophe (melting icecaps, rising sea levels, altered the Earth's axis and the seasons, death almost half the world population, etc ....). This incident was called "Second Impact" and the explanation "official" is that it was caused by a meteor that crashed in an area of \u200b\u200bAntarctica. MAIN CHARACTERS

- Soryu Asuka Langley: third driver to make his appearance in the series. Pilot Evangelion unit-02 and proviende of Germany, while his biological mother was Japanese. It is very outgoing. With an authoritarian character and warrior, child behavior masks a terrible childhood. The reason must be sought in the suicide of his mother during his childhood (in the wake of another experiment with Evangelion, but in this case his mother survived but with a great mental damage) and the desire to escape from these memories. At the beginning of the series hates Shinji anger but slowly becoming more friendly with him.

MANGA
The manga was first published after the start of the anime series (as opposed to in most series). Its author is Hideaki Anno (author of the anime) but Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (an employee of Anno). This makes the manga has a somewhat different anime, but for now remains more or less faithful to the original plot, and that has not yet completed its publication.
MOVIES
- Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion:

Currently only 2 movies have come out, one in 2007 (Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0: You Are ( not) alone) and another in 2009 (Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0: You can (not) advance), but are provided for 2 more (the next can out next summer).
